Who is at risk from CO poisoning?
All people and animals are at risk for CO poisoning. Anyone can become sick and die from CO poisoning when exposed to high enough levels. Certain groups — unborn babies, infants, and people with chronic heart disease, anemia, or respiratory problems — are more susceptible to its effects. Each year, more than 500 Americans die from unintentional CO poisoning, an estimated 20,000 visit the emergency room and more than 4,000 are hospitalized due to CO poisoning. Fatality is highest among Americans 65 and older.
High levels of CO can cause immediate health problems, and even death. There is also evidence that low concentration exposure on a regular basis can also have long-term detrimental effects on health and possibly reduce life expectancy as reported by roblems in low concentrations if a person experiences regular exposure (such as at home, or in the workplace). Significant exposure to CO can also reduce life expectancy, as reported in The Journal of the American Medical Association.
